Evidence for Saturation of Channel Transmission from Conductance Fluctuations in Atomic-Size Point Contacts

چکیده
The conductance of atomic-size contacts has a small, random, voltage dependent component analogous to conductance fluctuations observed in diffusive wires. A new effect is observed in gold contacts, consisting of a marked suppression of these fluctuations when the conductance of the contact is close to integer multiples of the conductance quantum. Using a model based on the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, we interpret this effect as evidence that the conductance tends to be built up from fully transmitted (i.e., saturated) channels plus a single, which is partially transmitted. Conduction Channel Transmissions of Atomic-Size Aluminum Contacts
We have determined the individual transmission coefficients of Al quantum point contacts containing up to six conduction channels. The determination is based on a comparison of the highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics in the superconducting state with the predictions of the theory for a single channel superconducting contact. We find that at least two channels contribute to the tran...
متن کاملMagnetotransport in atomic-size bismuth contacts.
We report low-temperature transport experiments on atomic-size contacts of bismuth that are fabricated using the mechanically controlled break-junction technique at low temperatures. We observe stable contacts with conductance values at fractions of one conductance quantum G0 = 2e(2)/h, as is expected for systems with long Fermi wavelength. We defer two preferred conductance scales: the lower o...
متن کاملMagnetism in Pd : Magnetoconductance and transport spectroscopy of atomic contacts
Since the rapid technological progress demands for ever smaller storage units, the emergence of stable magnetic order in nanomaterials down to the single-atom regime has attracted huge scientific attention to date. Electronic transport spectroscopy has been proven to be a versatile tool for the investigation of electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties of atomic contacts. Here we report a...
متن کاملGeneral transport properties of superconducting quantum point contacts: a Green functions approach
We discuss the general transport properties of superconducting quantum point contacts. We show how these properties can be obtained from a microscopic model using nonequilibrium Green’s function techniques. For the case of a one-channel contact we analyze the response under different biasing conditions: constant applied voltage, current bias and microwave-induced transport. Current fluctuations...
متن کاملQuantum thermopower of metallic atomic-size contacts at room temperature.
We report conductance and thermopower measurements of metallic atomic-size contacts, namely gold and platinum, using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at room temperature. We find that few-atom gold contacts have an average negative thermopower, whereas platinum contacts present a positive thermopower, showing that for both metals, the sign of the thermopower in the nanoscale differs from t...
